Crete - One of the surprises for many going to Crete for the first time is that this island is huge. The island is more than 150 miles long, and most cruise passengers only see a tiny part located near Iraklion and Knossos. The island does have many beachs (some of them are sandy and quite nice) but you should consider renting a car to get to good beaches since you will need to go at least 15 miles from Iraklion. There are buses to Rethymon from Heraklion (google KTEL (the bus company)) but you may find that they don't go frequently enough for your liking and are full and take at least an hour. Or just ask a taxi to take you there (and bring you back) - just don't miss the ship!
