I cruised on Island Escape in october, 2005. It was my first cruise and I loved it. However, it is very informal. Men did not wear ties to dinner, which was diappointing because the women were dressed really well in long skirts. etc. The entertainment crew is second to none. It is a very friendly ship and the food is excellent. Service excellent as on most cruises. Lovely atmosphere. This year we are sailing through the Panama Canal with Princess line as we like a couple of formal evenings at least. Enjoy your cruise. It's very free and easy and comfortable to be on. We have cruised on Island Princess around the Hawaiian Ialands in 05. Very nice ship, most of the Princess fleet have a simular layout and interior decor. The staff are there to please and they generally do.The food is normally of good quality. Just remember its an American operated ship, which in general are more relaxed and one can be as formal,or informal as you wish.Although its not as formal as Cunard,P&O or Fred Olsens. The any time dining option, is a wonderful way to meet new people.
I have not cruised on the Island Princess (we cruise with RCL) but have traelled throught the Panama Canal many times. Prior to entering the canal (it could be early morning) you need to find yourself a seat on any part of the higher open decks where you can see both sides of the Canal. It's a spectacular sight and lasts for aound 10 hours depending on the traffic using the canal. If you are mechanically minded the lock system is very interesting. I have you enjoy your cruise.
My wife and I and friends cruised through the panama canal thre years ago with RCL it was a fantastic experience if Acapulco is in your itinery make the most of it what an evenin.
did panama canal 4yrs ago with P/O.our ship only just fitted in the locks,we went right through, and on to Frisco, was really good, made all the more so becouse of our onboard travel manager, who gave lots of the history about the hundreds of thousands who died of malaria before the cause of the desease was discovered, and about the building of it before, also, try and take a pair binoculars with you for looking into the jungle on either side of locks, I forgot mine and was really envious of others telling me all the monkeys and things they could see,all in all an unforgettable experienc.
