Ida and Neil Down - Answered a Question by bowers (24 Feb 08 12:54)

You can certainly go it alone in Yalta and Odessa although I would recommend bartering with a taxi driver in Yalta to get to everything. Worth seeing in Yalta is the Livadia Palace and the Swallow’s nest Restaurant. There is also a beautiful Russian Orthodox church in the centre of Yalta which is well worth a visit, sorry I can’t recall the name but it is well known. The Sea will be too cold, unless you are a real Spartan, to swim in and the market style shops something else worth experiencing. I walked up the Potemkin steps and then walked around the town with its interesting parks and enjoyed it immensely. If you turn right at the top of the steps you will eventually come to the “Mother-in-Laws bridge” which is interesting with a small fountain or well below on which there is a large amount of graffiti which seems to have a lot of significance. If anyone can tell me why the large pedestrian bridge crossing the small gorge before that bridge is full of padlocks with messages I would be3 very grateful. So both places are unmissable but please be aware the crime is not unknown here and that you must ask the price of everything you buy in pubs and clubs as they have a nasty habit of charging you very high prices that by their laws you have to pay. Hope that helps….Nei.
