The ship entered service in 2001 so still fairly new and out of the top 30 cruise ships it was rated at No 4. We sailed the other way given the canal is like a rain forest in many ways the weather could be a bit inclement the day we sailed trough it we started about 8.30 and were clear around 4/5 p.m. but you do get a certificate signed by the captain to say you have dobe the trip. Ports of call all had interesting trips including one to a rain forest where you actually stayed dry as you were transported up the mountain in a canopy type gondola.
The food was excellent as was the accommodatiion we went concierge class and like this idea but a bit more expensive but sometimes you are upgraded and that might be your bonus !. There is plenty to do including computer classes; line dancing; bingo; art auctions; shopping arcade etc so you won't be bored and we found plenty of space to sit out. In the evening the entertainment we never managed to get to as we both like a gamble on the one armed bandits, but not roulette other other such games. In the 2007 Berlitz cruise guide book the ship scored 322 points out of 400 with 78 out of 100 for the entertainment. We love the island of Aruba and that should be your last port of call before Miama, but perhaps the itenary has changed. We did not find despite the more inclement areas around the canal a need to wrap up most of our notmal clothes we take with us on a Caribbena cruise were fine but an umbrella might be an extra just in case.
My favourite type of ship, it is elegant yet very contemporary looking so not stuffy at all, but small enough that you do not feel taht you are in the masses but big enough that you do not feel crowded.
Should still be a nice weather probably early 20's so just linen trousers, shorts, tshirts, evening would probably need a caridigan.
Drinks are an ok price and even better at the moment as onboard they have US$ and the conversion is gerat at the moment.
Cruised on Celebrity Infinity South America December 2006. The vast majority of passengers dressed elegantly for formal evenings. Gentlemen wore black dinner jackets or dark suits, and ladies long dresses or cocktail dresses. Some did not and on that cruise stood out like a sore thumb. Jackets for gents were required for the SS United States Restaurant even on casual nights. If you do not want to dress up the buffet restaurant is excellent but the formal dining room was smart even on casual nights. For tips we chose to have the specified daily amount charged to our bill and in addition at the end gave a token extra in dellars to those who really gave us special service. We found the concierge service was worth the extra especially at ports where tenders were used as you got priority after the tours had departed. There is also an enhanced room service menu. Bar prices are not cheap, having 15% added but acceptable at the moment with the good currency exchange. Cheapest wine around 30 dollars + 15%. Celebrity is probably the best all round cruise experience in the category below the real 6 star luxury ships.
We did this cruise in March. Ship is magnificent. Crew, facilities, all top class. Bar prices are not cheap! Tipping was left to the individual. There is a 'package' one can add to your end of cruise credit card bill which means you don't have to budget $$ for, but it is only applicable if you tip all that they suggest. We tip only the Cabin Steward & asst; Table Waiter & busboy, & I gave a few $$ to the Maitre D & asst Maitre D simply because they had helped me with some UK Football info, normally I would not have included them.
The last two answers summ up the clothes bar prices and tipping. Concierge Class cabins are a great investment and we find certainly worth the little extra investment.
You could find that the weather in late October in San Francisco can be surprisingly cool and a warm fleece or the like will be handy. (Just before you go take a look on the web at the 5 day forecast for the San Francisco area) Once you get to and past San Diego then outside temperatures will be hot and humidity high right through to F.L. Have something handy for the shoulders on Infinity, they do tend to keep the air con. cool.
We love Infinity and trust you will Neil and Ida Dow.
The ship is fantastic, dress code of an evening is smart as dinning is amazing. Day time is casual, weather really humid you will have a lovely time.
We haven't sailed on Celebrity yet, though I hear they are very good, but did the Panama Canal from San Francisco to New York with Princess in Sept, 2004 and loved it. Expect it to be very wet in Gatun Lake but a fascinating experience overall. Weather should be warm for most of the trip. Enjoy. Brian Lang.
I have done this trip on the Norwegian Spirit calling at Cabo San Lucas,Puerto Vallarta,Acapulco,Costa Rica,Panama, Aruba,Miami, you will feel comfortable in light casual clothing despite the heat, the Panama Canal was exciting and we called at Aruba before Miami, I took an air boat ride on the Everglades and got very heavily bitten by mosquitoes,be careful here. Enjoy your trip, lucky you.
