Hampson - Answered a Question by McFadyen (08 May 08 14:24)

Hi, we've just been on the QE2 last week. Formal - most men had lovely black suits with the black bow tie, but not all of them. There were a variety of outfits - kilts, traditional dress for diff countries, plain jackets and ties. I noticed the restaurant had ties as you went into the restaurant for you to borrow if you don't have one. The ships on board also sold a good selection of ties, bow ties, jackets and i must say at a reasonable rate. The semi formal nights most men had jackets but again some didn't wear jackets, i think they all had to wear some sort of a tie, again they had some to lend you. This dress code is only for the restaurants though, i noticed that if you ate in the relaxed self service lido some people didn't dress up in there, although i found that created a lack of the atmosphere available in the restuarants.

Difficult question. A tartan jacket might be appropriate if it is the sort that you would wear to a formal night out to a dinner or ball but without seeing it I would not be certain. QE2 is a formal ship and most people will be in DJs or a dark suit. You would also be fine with a dress kilt. So to sum up ...on formal nights on QE2 most men will dress in traditional formal attire. You must decide how suitable you would feel with this in mind......Sorry for the indecisiveness of this....Id.

Many thanks for your reply to my query re the QE2. We have cruised a few times before, but not on Cunard, and my husband always wore a smart lounge suit for the formal nights. I think a dinner jacket or suit is the thing we shall take. I have no such problems! Being Scottish I have a full length tartan skirt and white blouse for one of the formal nights. Thank you again for your help. Happy New year to you both!
